Since 2007 Ning has pioneered cookery classes in Malaysian food, hosted in our beautiful restaurant in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. Now for the first time we bring you a series of exciting themed masterclasses with our very own celebrity chef Norman Musa.
Learn more about our chef here.
Showcasing the amazing diversity of delicious Malaysian cuisine, you will learn how to cook some of Malaysia’s most distinctive and iconic dishes found on the streets and in the homes of different parts of this multicultural country. Preparing and cooking from scratch, Chef Norman will guide the novice to experienced alike in developing your knowledge and techniques in a culinary adventure.

Expect a culinary adventure on each class
Each class will take place on a Saturday (so no early Sunday mornings involved!) in our restaurant and/or kitchen and will involve a minimum of starter, main course and dessert. You will be able to enjoy expert, friendly tuition from Chef Norman and his team; enjoy your cooking afterwards with wine/beer or non-alcoholic drink and get to take some of it away too if you wish; and receive a full pack of recipes, background reading and starter spice pack. Plus you will have the opportunity to buy the essential ingredients to get cooking at home. Very much hands-on, each masterclass includes an inspirational introduction to the theme of the day.Book today or order as a perfect gift
We expect these classes to be sought after with no more than 10 guests on each class. When booking you must specify the date of the class you wish to join, or wish to purchase as a gift for someone. (If you are unable to do so, then you are welcome to purchase general Ning gift vouchers but this does NOT guarantee a place - it is the recipient's responsibility to book.)

Inspired and trained by our celebrity Executive Chef Norman Musa, they made their debut at the York Food Festival in 2012 and will be ably assisted by our friendly manager Hirman.
In this class you will learn the background to Malaysian cuisine, key ingredients and famous dishes, as well as cooking a mini feast of Malaysian favourites including Rendang and Murtabak for you to enjoy after the class AND to take away.
Malaysia's Nyonya Cuisine masterclass
Choice of dates: Saturday 11 May, 10am to 3pm.
Venue: Ning, 92-94 Oldham Street, Manchester.
Price & availability: £145 per person; max. 10 places per class.
‘Nyonya’ cuisine is unique to Malaysia and Singapore, representing the distinctive heritage of Chinese immigrants who inter-married with local Malays. Originating in the historical city of Melaka in south west Malaysia, this fusion of Chinese, Malay and Portuguese influences dates back to the 16th Century when the Portuguese colonized this part of the region. A dying culinary art, interest is growing back in Malaysia to rejuvenate this wonderfully flavoursome food and Chef Norman’s research will demonstrate how delicious it is. From the sweet and soury ingredients, the historical influences to the specific techniques in cooking, you will be treated to what’s probably the UK’s only masterclass in this style of cuisine.
